Run on PC VR
Headsets that render from a PC, such as the Valve Index, the HTC Vive, a Windows headset, a Quest on Link or Air Link, and the Steam Frame, all reach this page through an OpenXR runtime on the PC. The browser built into the Steam Frame does not support WebXR yet, so on that headset this runs by streaming from the PC. Desktop Chrome is the browser to use.
1. Pick the OpenXR runtime
- SteamVR: Settings, then OpenXR, then Set SteamVR as OpenXR runtime. Use this for the Index, the Vive, the Steam Frame and most PC headsets.
- Meta Quest Link: in the Meta Quest desktop app open Settings, then General, then set Meta Quest Link as the active OpenXR runtime.
- Virtual Desktop: start the Virtual Desktop Streamer on the PC and connect from the headset, then use whichever runtime the streamer asks for, usually SteamVR or VDXR.
Start the runtime and put the headset on before you press Enter VR. Chrome only offers a session when a runtime is already running.
2. Turn on WebXR in Chrome
- Open
chrome://flags. - Set WebXR Device API to Enabled, if that flag is listed. Newer Chrome builds ship it on and no longer show it.
- Set WebXR Runtime to Default, or to OpenXR if Default does not find your headset.
- Relaunch Chrome.
3. If the session still refuses to start
Some OpenXR runtimes do not ship the appcontainer extension that Chrome sandboxes XR with, and the session fails immediately. Launch Chrome once with the sandbox for XR turned off:
chrome.exe --disable-features=XRSandbox
Close every Chrome window first, or the flag is ignored and the new window joins the running instance. Only use this launch flag for this session, it lowers a security boundary that applies to the whole browser.
Notes
- PC VR gets a higher framebuffer scale and lighter foveation than a standalone headset, so it looks sharper.
- Controllers and hand tracking both work. Hand tracking depends on the runtime.
- Leaving VR on PC reloads the page. That is a Chromium bug where only the first session of a page presents correctly with SteamVR, so the page starts fresh instead of showing a black headset.
Put on a headset or pick up your phone and walk into the music. Every sky, sea and rocket is built in code and runs free in your browser.
